Untangling Grief in the Mother Daughter Relationship

Grief.

It makes sense that such a heavy word would be used to define such an overwhelmingly weighty emotion. With that in mind, I guess it also makes sense that no one wants to talk about it – at least not for very long.

Well, per usual we are here to talk about the things no one else wants to! 🤪

Often times we associate the feeling of grief with the loss of a loved one. This is absolutely the case, but we tend to discount all the other losses in our lives that can bring us grief. This cumbersome emotion, after all, is our natural response as humans to loss.

So let’s recognize that and own that. Yes, we will experience grief when someone we love passes, but we will also feel it when we change jobs, go through a break-up, move out of our childhood homes – heck – we will even feel it when we finally let go of our favorite and most well-worn hoodie!

With all the different ways we will face grief, it’s no wonder it is such a personal and unique experience for each of us. There is no one way to grieve; no right way or wrong way.

Each of us will feel it differently, at different times, with varying degrees of hurt and pain throughout our lifetimes. No one person’s grief is any more or less valid than another’s, ’cause to be honest? It all sucks.

But just because it sucks doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be looking at it, talking about it, or feeling all the feels that come with it.

So, with that being said, join us today as we work at untangling grief in the mother daughter relationship. Together we discuss the grief cycle and how it plays a role as this relationship matures. We’ll also share some of our own experiences with grief in our ever-shifting and ever-growing relationship.

What we most hope for you to get out of this episode?

The process is your own; don’t let anyone else define it.
